Adrian Cale

Adrian Cale is a television presenter, wildlife film-maker, writer, naturalist and adventurer whose lifelong passion affords him an encyclopaedic knowledge and profound experience of the natural world.

BACKGROUND

Adrian’s professional career started early. As a child actor he performed on the West End stage and appeared in numerous television programmes and commercials. Over the years his ability to lift words from the page and bring them to life led to consistent bookings as a voice over artist, adding his vocal touch to a broad variety of projects.

Inspired and enthralled by natural history for as long as he can remember, he also caught the ‘animal bug’ at a very young age. While others were reading comics he was ingesting the entire monthly contents of Animal Life magazine and as others would watch cartoons he was would watch wildlife documentaries. In later life, while others were reading car manuals, he was absorbing the works of Darwin and other scientific luminaries and satiating a particular penchant for primates with the works of Jane Goodall and Birute Galdikas.

Adrian has kept and bred all manner of animals, birds and fish since childhood and as a result has been a consultant for a number of specialist animal organisations over the years.

He has always had an eye for the written word and through working with professional scripts from such a young age developed a keen appreciation of the structure of prose and the art of storytelling. A grounding which held him in good stead in later life developing marketing and PR campaigns for the then up and coming computer and video games industry and later as a copywriter for hire as he juggled professional engagements with all things animal!

FROM RARE BREEDS TO HIS TRUSTY DOG

Prior to becoming a presenter and wildlife filmmaker he divided his time as a writer with that of an aquatic, bird and small animal advisor to a specialist animal supplier. Having kept a menagerie of species over the years including aviaries full of finches, parakeets and lovebirds, far too many fish tanks bursting with bristle-nosed catfish, African and South American cichlids, anabantids, piranha, rare livebearers and a million other oddities, as well as reptiles, small mammals and a trusty dog he was well placed to offer advice.

He has travelled the length and breadth of the country exhibiting exotic fish at local and national shows and is not afraid to admit that he is a bit of a fish nerd – becoming the youngest ever show secretary at the Sudbury Aquarist Society aged 14 and going on to later work closely with the Federation of British Aquatic Societies (FBAS).

Adrian’s grounding as a passionate naturalist began when he joined the XYZ ‘Young Zoologists Club’ at London Zoo as a child. The club took him on weekend visits to zoological collections around the country, slide shows and talks on skinks or skunks or whatever and was the catalyst for his interest in ethical zoo conservation and outreach conservation projects.

He has been a volunteer Zoo Keeper for a number of years as and when time permits and has worked with all manner of animals including primates both big and small, large mammals including giraffe and okapi, and of course The Aquarium.

Taking an active interest in enclosure design, enrichment, species compatibility and captive breeding programmes he has taken this experience abroad, contributing to various conservation projects around the world.

Local wildlife proves just as fascinating to Adrian and he can often be found walking his dog for hours noting sightings of familiar and part-time wild visitors to his local park. A hovering kestrel hunting low above its favourite patch still draws a gasp of youthful awe from a watching presenter.

Well-read, experienced and an informed observer of the natural world – it was inevitable that Adrian would eventually combine his interests and skill sets to communicate his passion for wildlife as a television presenter and wildlife filmmaker.
